"Chinese Dream · Colorful China" Chinese Ethnic Song and Dance Gala

Date: 10/01/2026

  • The Hong Kong Children's Choir (HKCC) Youth Dance was invited by Law Yiu-wai, Honorary Advisor (Dance) of HKCC, President of the Association of Hong Kong Dance Organizations, and Director of the Hong Kong Ethnic Dance Group, to participate in the "Chinese Dream · Colorful China" Chinese Ethnic Song and Dance Gala on the evening of 10 January. Hosted by the Hong Kong Ethnic Dance Group, the dance gala took place at Sheung Wan Civic Centre Theatre.

This dance gala is the third show of the Chinese Dream series launched by the Hong Kong Ethnic Dance Group since 2018 and 2023. Themed "Colorful China", the dance gala was divided in four chapters: "Grasslands", "Snow", "Xinjiang", and "Flowers".

Led by HKCC Dance Supervisor Michelle Loi, members of Youth Dance taking the stage in the final part of the dance gala, performed two distinctive dances in the fourth chapter "Flowers": the Dai ethnic dance Fragrance of Miangui Flowers and the Lingnan-style dance Lovely Drums.

Fragrance of Miangui Flowers takes the elegant osmanthus flower as its motif. Through graceful posture, delicate imitative gestures and light footsteps, the dance vividly depicts the scene of flowers blooming and fragrance spreading far and wide. On the other hand, Lovely Drums is a distinctive Lingnan-style dance which blends traditional Cantonese drum music, opera postures and modern choreography. The dancers act as both musicians and performers, creating a playful dialogue between drumbeats and body movements such as beating, shaking and tossing. Light-hearted and humorous in style with varied rhythms, the dance vividly portrays the wit and humor of Lingnan’s civic life, while showcasing the optimistic and vibrant vitality of Lingnan culture.

Throughout the evening, performances by all participating troupes kept the atmosphere warm and lively, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. Beyond its immersive audio-visual experience, the gala also provided members with valuable stage practice and a platform for exchange with other troupes.
